Information on Women’s Monthly Reproductive Cycle and the Process of Conception

If you and your partner has decided to take a step forward towards parenthood, and you are all gung ho about getting pregnant, then it is important for you to know the whole concept of Conception. It is important to have a detailed knowledge about how things work and how fertilisation or conception takes place. With this knowledge, it will be easier to get pregnant.

Monthly Reproduction Cycle:

To conceive one should know the conception process properly, and for that, you need to be equipped with detailed and correct information about the Female’s Reproductive Cycle. A female body consist of around 400,000 eggs in the ovaries. A female hits puberty around 12-14 years of age and starts ovulating. Every month several eggs mature and one is released from the ovaries. At the same point, the lining of the uterus thickens, to act as a nest and hold the egg if it gets fertile. If the egg does not get fertile in 12 – 48 hours, it collapses. After 1-2 weeks later, the lining of the uterus also sheds, and this is termed as “Menstruation”. This whole cycle takes place every month.

The Process of Ovulation:

Ovulation is when a matured egg is released from the ovary, ready to get fertile by a male’s sperm. This happens when Follicle, which holds the eggs, burst opens to release the egg. Then the ovum or egg travels into the Fallopian tube, ready to get fertile. Ovulation usually takes place after 14-15 days from the first day of the last menstrual cycle.

The ovulation period is the ‘most fertile period’ to conceive. If a woman engages in an unprotected intercourse during this period, conception can take place, as the matured egg is already receptive to a sperm. The fertile period is usually from 5 days before the ovulation period, during the ovulation and 1 day after the ovulation period.

Conception:

When a woman engages in an unsafe sexual intercourse with her partner, the sperm is ejaculated in her vagina. The sperm then flows through her cervix into the Fallopian tube, where it fertilizes the egg. Even a single sperm is capable of fertilizing the egg. The sperm gets merged in the centre of the egg, called Zygote.

The pregnancy takes place only after the fertilized egg or the zygote is implanted in the lining of the woman’s uterus. This process can take several days after the fertilization of egg.
