Once upon a time, there used to be a large majority of mothers who did not work after having children. It seemed like as if your career prospects were over once you had children. And the only job your are left with is to bring up your children in a happy and healthy environment.

However, in the last century, changes in social attitudes and rising living costs saw more and more women preferring to work after child birth. This return to work can actually happen after few weeks of giving birth to a child. The time span usually differs from one women to another.

As a working mother, you can return to work in any capacity that suits your needs the best. It can be in full time, part time or temporary capacity. It is observed that longer the gap from work, the harder it is coping with returning to work. It may look like a daunting task to step back into the workplace. There are some women who put off having children in favour of developing their careers beforehand, as it is a common belief that career development prospects becomes little too difficult to realise after childbirth.

A mother may return to work for numerous reasons. Many want to become financially self dependent again, or simply you have no choice but to live and work. Few mothers look for new career direction, or want to judge their skills. Many find life in home little too restricting and love to throw themselves into work. The reasons usually vary from one woman to another woman.

There are many employers who are making room for mothers to work in a flexible manner. The flexible work environment allows the mother to balance family life with a working life. If you notice that the career prospects look grim with your current employer, you can always switch to a more family-friendly company.

Working after a long hiatus

Bringing up children is considered as one of the most challenging tasks anyone can ever undertake. And when you are thinking as a mother returning to work, you should never underestimate the abilities and qualities that you have obtained as a parent. The personal skills that you have acquired can be applied to other jobs and careers pretty well.

After returning to the work, it’s actually worth sitting down and taking stock of all your new skills that you have acquired from any employment before you started a family. Don’t ever forget to mention them on your new updated CV, if going for a job interview or filling out a job application. These new skills can be quite beneficial to your new job role.
