Travelling during pregnancy is very normal until and unless a woman has been advised not to do so because of any complications in their pregnancy.
But if a woman has any complications it is absolutely not recommended to travel as it may be dangerous for the mother as well as for the baby. Travelling depends on many things like the way you are going to travel, how long will the journey be and how is your health at that point of time.
It is generally comfortable to travel during the second trimester as most of the women have overcome their problems of morning sickness and other vomiting problems. But if one travels during the third trimester, one gets tired too soon; therefore long hours of travel are not advisable.
Travelling during the last 2 -3 weeks is not recommended because if your labor pain starts early, you will land into trouble. It is advised to be near home during this time and also to have some companion near you always in case of need.
Travelling during pregnancy by air is considered to be the safest during the second trimester as one is the fittest at that time and the delivery period is also not near. Most of the airlines don’t allow traveling if the pregnancy period is more than 35- 36 weeks. The permission of the doctor should always be taken before travelling long distances. And if more than one baby is expected, travelling during pregnancy should be avoided.
If you decide to travel by car you should always use a seatbelt. When travelling over bumpy roads, extra care should be taken. Seat belt should always be worn, and care must be taken that it is not worn over the tummy. You should try to stop every 2 hours of your travel.
If travelling by train, you should try and take a short walk every two hours and try to sit in a comfortable position. One should hold something and walk or ask someone to hold your hand and then walk.
It is always advised to consult your doctor before you set out to travel if you want to ensure for yourself a safe and happy journey.
