Many families today are living on two people’s income. In this materialistic world, it can be a little difficult to survive only on one income. Housing costs and cost of living in many metro cities are quite appalling, and thus living on one salary running can be quite challenging.

Some statistic shows that one- third of all household Income is led by one parent. This means that many of us are making household on one income. However, many couples realize that both spouses do not really add up to much extra. For instance, when both are working together, an added percentage is spent on gas, maintenance, vehicle and commuting etc.
Besides all this, the step to living on one income is not an easy job. When both the parents are working, then family finances can be managed quite well. Living more lavishly and paying down the debt become much easier with two people’s income.
It is extremely hard to regulate to only one income. You might have to curtail some extra things to make the living easy. But once you cut down the costs and change your spending habits, you would start analyzing more areas that can be restrained without affecting your needs.

Cut down your debt
Credit cards can be quite tempting to have when you are trying to cut down your spending. Curtailing your debt is the simple way to locate extra money in your finances. It may take a while, but then it’s worth it.
Work on necessary things
Try to minimize your expenses by working on what is actually required. For instance, do you really require paying for a water softener or water service, when they are comparatively cheaper through a home store? Instead of paying one year's rental on a softener, you might consider purchasing one and bring down the rental costs from your monthly expenses.
Be prudent
The key is to concentrate on your goal. If you wish to run your household smoothly, then work with your spouse to make a list of priorities. Be prudent in your decisions and plan thing for future well in advance
Take on extra work
If you are highly experienced, then you can probably find a way to add to the extra family income just be staying at home. Whether it is catering, babysitting or selling locally, you may take up those things that help you to make extra money.
Keeping an emergency fund
In case of any unforeseen situation like accident, illness etc. the family completely shatters when it is dependent on one household income.
An emergency fund lends a helping hand during the urgent situations. One should at least have three months expenses in their emergency fund.
